Geographical location

Marçà is a municipality of the Priorat. It has 611 inhabitants (1998 census). It is situated in the south of the county. The municipality has an area of 16,08 Km2, and it is closed to the north-west buttresses of the Llaberia mountain range and the Mola de Colldejou. It is drained by the Marçà water course, which is a tributary of the Capçanes water course which comes from the Argentera mountain range.

It is by the Mil.loquera hill, and bounds with the following municipalities: Capçanes, els Guiamets, el Masroig, Falset, Pradell de la Teixeta, and el Colldejou. This excellent position allows the people from Marçà to go to the surroundings in short times: for example, to Falset (5 min.), Móra d'Ebre (10 min.), Reus (30 min.), Tarragona (45 min.), Lérida (60 min.), and to the coast (30 min.).

Economical activities

Marçà is an agricultural village. The area in the municipality that is not cultivated is taken up be fields, forest and wood. The agriculture is unirrigated, and the main grows are the vineyard, and the olive, almond and hazel trees. There are also some farms with chiken, rabbits and piggs.

The Sindicato Vinícola del Baix Priorat was founded in1913, and the Sindicato Agrícola was founded in 1919. Both of them prepared carefully the wine of the members of these unions. In1936 the two unions joined into the Cooperativa Agrícola de Falset, which is now occupied in preparing and comercializing the wines (denominación de origen de Tarragona, subregion of Falset) and the almonds and hazels.

Some people are occupied in the industry: constructions, textiles, cratsmanship, etc, and finally in services such as trade and tourism.

The good greographical position and the net of comunications cause that one part of the avtive population works in other villages of the county, or in the next counties (Baix Camp and Ribera d'Ebre).
